25 SOMETHING IN THE WATER A rundown of the common culprits polluting stormwater runoff and their possible sources. SEDIMENT Reduces the amount of light available for plant growth; can clog and damage sensitive tissues such as sh gills; can su ocate organisms. Sources: land surface erosion, vehicle wear, organic matter (e.g. leaf litter), weathering of buildings. PH (ACIDITY) Increased acidity damages plants and animals. Sources: organic matter decay, illegal discharge, atmospheric deposition, erosion of roo ng material. NUTRIENTS Stimulate the growth of aquatic plants, leading to dramatic uctuations in dissolved oxygen levels. Oxygen depletion can kill aquatic organisms leading to anaerobic decomposition and smelly waterways. Sources: fertiliser, sewer over ows, animal faeces.
